“Monocoque” is fancy French for “single shell”, where the car’s body itself carries the loads instead of sitting on a separate ladder frame.
Modern passenger cars are essentially unibody/monocoque, which makes them lighter, stiffer, and better at crash energy management than old body-on-frame designs.
It’s efficient, space-friendly, and avoids the wobble you get when the body and chassis argue like a married couple over a speed bump.
Heavy-duty utes and some 4x4s still use body-on-frame for towing and brutal off-road punishment, but most daily drivers go monocoque for comfort and handling.
Purists will note most cars are technically “semi-monocoque”, where skin and sub-structures share the load—close enough for the pub chat.
