Ask a campfire full of tourers and the usual suspects pop up. Toyota’s 1HZ and 1HD‑FTE are loved for stout internals, long service life and a huge parts network, though they’re hardly sprinters. Isuzu’s 4JJ1 wins fans for durability and sensible fueling, while the older 4BD1 is agricultural—in the best way. Nissan’s TD42 is famously tough if kept cool, but thirsty and a bit shouty. Over in truck-land, the Cummins 6BT is near‑indestructible, just heavy and not exactly subtle.
