national road toll australia

In Australia, “road toll” means the number of people killed on the roads, not a fee to drive.

The national road toll is compiled and published by the federal transport research bureau (BITRE) and state road agencies, with monthly updates.

Totals swing with season and policy, and while the long arc since the 1970s is down thanks to safer cars and roads, recent years have seen stubborn bumps.

For the current figure, check the latest BITRE dashboard and your state reports—they break it down by state, road user and crash type.

When comparing trends, use rolling 12‑month totals and per‑capita rates; otherwise you’re reading the scoreboard after the first quarter and calling the match.
