nissan x trail 2002 problems Page 5

The first‑gen 2002 Nissan X‑Trail (T30) is a tough old bus, but two decades of Aussie sun reveal some predictable gremlins.

When shopping one, keep an eye out for these usual suspects:

• Mass airflow sensors and ignition coils causing rough idle, stalling, or limp mode.
• The 2.5‑litre QR25DE can develop oil consumption and catalytic converter degradation if servicing’s been skipped—watch for smoke and low compression.
• The 4‑speed auto is generally hardy; check for delayed shifts and fresh fluid, while manuals can have tired clutches and noisy bearings.
• Driveline wear (rear diff mount bush, CV joints) and transfer case leaks on hard‑worked 4x4s.
• Cooling and corrosion: ageing radiators/hoses, blocked sunroof drains, and rust around the tailgate and underbody on coastal cars.

Get a pre‑purchase inspection with a scan and compression test, look underneath for leaks and rust, budget for bushes and rubber bits, then enjoy a simple, usable SUV.
