number plate availability nsw Page 60

Chasing number plate availability in NSW? The short version: personalised and custom plates are handled by myPlates for Transport for NSW, and you can punch in your desired combo in their availability checker to see if it’s free.

Keep it clean—offensive words, misleading combos and some reserved formats are automatically blocked, and options depend on the plate style (letters, numbers and length limits vary). If your dream tag is taken, try a different plate style or tweak the mix of letters and numbers—swapping O for 0 won’t fool the system, sorry. Once you’ve found a free combo, you place the order, pay the fee, then collect or have them sent, and you’ll also cop an annual fee on many styles. For standard-issue series plates, you can’t “jump the queue”; if it’s already in use or reserved, you’re out of luck. If in doubt, Service NSW can confirm status or help move plates between vehicles.
