overseas drivers licence vic Page 8

Visiting Victoria on a temporary visa? You can drive on your valid overseas licence in VIC, provided it’s in English or you carry an International Driving Permit or an official translation, and you meet the age and vehicle conditions printed on it.

If you take up residence (permanent or long‑term), you’re expected to convert to a Victorian licence within about 6 months of moving here.

Carry your physical licence and proof of identity, obey local road rules, and remember that an expired licence is as useful as a chocolate teapot.

Overseas learner permits aren’t a free pass to drive solo—get a Vic learner permit and follow L‑plate rules.

Insurance and police will take “But it was fine back home” as well as you’d expect, so sort the paperwork before the Sunday run to Bunnings.

For the fine print and edge cases, check VicRoads.
