In Queensland, P‑plate drivers have a lower demerit point threshold than open licence holders, so the meter fills up faster than a servo pie warmer.
Demerit points are recorded for three years from the offence date, and when you hit the P‑plate threshold you’ll get a notice to choose a suspension or a 12‑month good behaviour period.
On good behaviour you’re allowed only 1 demerit point for the year—blow it and you’ll wear a suspension that’s twice the original length.
Serious offences (think drink/drug driving or very high‑range speeding) can trigger immediate action regardless of points, because of course they do.
