p plater rules nsw

Ah, the joyous rites of passage for every young driver in New South Wales. P platers, or Provisional drivers, must obey a slew of rules designed to keep them and the rest of us safe (and sane). You get to proudly plaster that big red 'P' on your car, reminding everyone you’re still learning the ropes.

  • Speed limit: 90 km/h max, even if the signs say otherwise.
  • Passenger restrictions: No more than one passenger under 21 between 11pm and 5am.
  • Blood alcohol content: Zero tolerance—none, nada, zilch.
  • Display P plates: Front and rear, visible and in red.

Break these, and you risk fines, demerit points, or a swift trip back to learner status. For the full gospel, consult the official NSW Roads and Maritime Services documentation or ServiceCentral for updates.
