personal import car from uk to australia Page 8

Bringing a personal import car from the UK to Australia isn’t witchcraft, but it does need paperwork and patience.

You’ll need a Vehicle Import Approval under the Road Vehicle Standards framework before it ships, then it’s biosecurity inspection, asbestos-free proof, and compliance to Australian Design Rules once it lands.

Budget for shipping (RoRo or container), port fees, quarantine cleaning, 10% GST, possible customs duty, and Luxury Car Tax if you’ve treated yourself a bit too much.

After compliance and a roadworthy, you register it in your state and sort insurance; then you can finally brag at the servo with a straight face.

Pro tip: cars that fit concessional pathways (specialist/enthusiast, or 25+ years old) are usually simpler; anything mainstream may need costly compliance work.

Get quotes in writing from a customs broker and compliance workshop before you commit—surprises are great at birthdays, not on the wharf.
