Short version: there’s no nationwide ban on selling new petrol or diesel cars in Australia—nobody’s prising the keys from your hands just yet. The ACT plans to phase out sales of new fossil-fuelled light vehicles by 2035, while other states focus on incentives and sales targets rather than outright bans. Federally, a New Vehicle Efficiency Standard starts tightening CO₂ limits from 2025; it nudges the market, it doesn’t ban models. Even where phase-outs are proposed, existing and used petrol/diesel cars can still be owned, bought and sold. Expect the mix to shift steadily toward EVs as supply improves and running costs sharpen, with utes and 4x4s following a bit later. In other words: evolution, not revolution—bring your patience, and maybe a home charger.
