If your petrol gauge isn’t working, don’t panic—the tank hasn’t turned into a black hole; the electrics are just being dramatic.

Most faults come down to the sender in the tank, a dodgy earth, or an instrument cluster having a little lie-in.

• Failed or sticky fuel level sender/float in the tank
• Corroded connector or bad earth near the tank
• Blown fuse or faulty instrument voltage regulator/stepper motor
• Damaged wiring between sender and cluster
• Aftermarket gauge not calibrated to the sender

Start with the basics: check the fuse, clean the earths and connectors at the tank, and scan for codes like P0460–P0464; if you can access the sender, move the float by hand and watch the gauge.

If wiring and grounds are good but the gauge stays comatose, the cluster or sender likely needs repair—an auto sparky can confirm without guesswork.

Fix it before you discover “E” truly means “Exercise.”
