Ask the seller whether a bird is aviary raised or hand raised, how old it is, what it is being fed, whether it has been sexed and whether it wears a closed leg ring.

Arrange to see the bird where it currently lives before you agree to anything. A young bird settled in a clean flight, still with its parents or its clutch mates, tells you far more than any photograph. Ask for the breeder's details, the hatch date and any health or identification records the seller holds. Some species need a licence or a permit to keep, and moving certain birds between states can carry its own rules, so check what applies to you and to the bird you are looking at before you travel or book transport.
