In 2023, Australia finally gave plug-in hybrids some proper shelf space: mainstream options like Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV and MG HS Plus EV, sporty Cupra Formentor/Leon VZe, and premium picks from Volvo, BMW and Porsche.

Expect electric-only range around 40–90 km (WLTP), and home charging on a 7 kW wallbox in roughly 2–4 hours; DC fast charging is rare or limited on most PHEVs.

New prices ran about $49k–$70k for mainstream heroes, $70k–$100k for Euro mid-sizers, and $120k+ for luxe SUVs (AUD), while used stock was thin but growing.

Plug in often and they’re cheap to run; skip the cable and you’re just bench‑pressing a battery for bragging rights—peak suburban theatre.

If your daily trips are under 50 km and you’ve got off‑street charging, a PHEV fits like a comfy thongs-and-hoodie combo; otherwise consider a regular hybrid or a full EV.
