Ah, the infamous "polyester car"—a term often used Down Under to describe vehicles with fiberglass bodies rather than traditional metal panels. These cars, like the classic Holden Monaro or the Chevrolet Corvette, boast bodies made from polyester resin reinforced with glass fibers. This makes them lighter and resistant to rust, but also prone to cracking under severe stress or impact.

While polyester-bodied cars offer a quirky charm and decent performance gains due to weight savings, their repair costs can be a nightmare if you don’t have a trusty panel beater with polyester expertise. They’re a staple in Aussie muscle car culture, and spotting one on Tradingpost or CarShowroom can be a treat for enthusiasts.

Bottom line: polyester cars are a clever, if delicate, alternative to metal cars. Just don’t expect them to behave like steel in a ding.
