In Queensland, “motor vehicle stamp duty” is basically vehicle registration duty—the tax you pay when you buy a car or transfer its rego. It’s calculated on the car’s dutiable value (the purchase price and certain fitted options) and varies by vehicle type and engine/fuel category.
You pay it to Queensland Transport and Main Roads at the time of registering or transferring the vehicle, right alongside the usual paperwork you forgot to print. Exemptions and concessions exist for specific cases (for example, certain disability or charity uses), and commercial vehicles can follow different rules.
To estimate your hit, check your vehicle’s value and engine type, then use the official QLD calculator or contact TMR, because rates change more often than Brisbane’s weather. In short: the nicer and pricier (or thirstier) the car, the more duty you’ll owe.
