In Queensland, the right to display a personalised plate sits with you, not the car, so you can transfer it rather than waving it goodbye with the buyer.
Moving the plate to another vehicle you own is a quick assignment via TMR/PPQ; handing it to someone else needs a PPQ transfer with both parties’ details, proof of ID, and a fee.
You can’t transfer a QLD personalised plate to another state’s registration, and if you’re selling the car but keeping the combo, swap on standard plates before the sale.
Make sure there are no outstanding fines, the rego details match, and the plate isn’t damaged—if it is, replace it first.
Once reassigned, fit the plates and keep the assignment confirmation handy, then tell your insurer so they don’t have an identity crisis at renewal.
