red p and green p Page 5

Ah, the classic Australian learner driver's rite of passage: the infamous Red P and Green P plates. The Red P represents the provisional licence phase where you're still finding out that the world doesn't revolve around you, while the Green P signals you've earned a bit more trust and freedom on the roads. Red P drivers usually have more restrictions (like lower speed limits and zero alcohol tolerance), while Green P holders get a bit more leeway but still can't go full highway warrior.

These plates are mandatory in most states to signal your driving experience level to everyone else, so expect some side-eye from other drivers. Prices for the licences themselves vary, but learning to not kill yourself behind the wheel is priceless—or at least costs a few hundred bucks in lessons and tests. For exact rules and regs, check your state's road authority or resources like ServiceCentral.
