The Road Safety Act 1986 (Victoria) is the big stick behind how we drive, register cars, and get told off when we behave like rally heroes on a school run. It sets the legal framework for licensing and vehicle registration, and creates offences such as speeding, drink and drug driving, and using a phone behind the wheel. It also gives Victoria Police and authorised officers the power to enforce the rules, along with penalties that can include fines, licence suspension, vehicle impoundment, and court orders. The Act lets the government make detailed regulations—like the Road Safety Road Rules—so the nitty-gritty (think speed limits and give-way rules) lives there. If you need chapter-and-verse, consult the official Victorian legislation or VicRoads; otherwise, consider it the reason your right foot has a conscience.
