road trips south australia Page 7

South Australia does road trips like it does wine: big, bold, and occasionally making you question your life choices in the best way.

Do the Fleurieu Peninsula loop for beaches and McLaren Vale sips, or cruise the Barossa and Clare for cellar doors and smug picnic selfies.

Head north to the Flinders Ranges for jaw-dropping gorges and outback skies; some tracks are rough, so a decent SUV and common sense help.

Westward, the Eyre Peninsula serves oysters, sea cliffs and a teaser of the Nullarbor; south, the Limestone Coast brings Robe, the Blue Lake and Coonawarra reds.

Keen on wildlife? Hop the ferry to Kangaroo Island and pretend your hatchback is a safari truck for a weekend.

Pack water, check road conditions, and leave room in the boot for wine you absolutely weren’t going to buy.
