In Victoria, a Certificate of Roadworthiness is done by a licensed vehicle tester and it’s about safety, not making your 2005 nugget feel factory-fresh.
They check brakes, tyres, lights, steering, suspension, seatbelts, windscreen and any structural rust or leaks that affect safety—your squeaky glovebox isn’t on the list.
The certificate is generally valid for 30 days, and you’ll need one to transfer rego when selling a used car (handy to know if you’re listing on Tradingpost).
Budget roughly $180–$300 AUD for the inspection, plus whatever it costs to fix defects; it’s a pass/fail gate, not a warranty.
Book ahead, bring the car clean underneath, and let the tester actually see the parts you’re hoping will pass.
