South Australia’s salt flats are nature’s biggest photo filter, with Lake Gairdner, Kati Thanda–Lake Eyre, and even the pinkish Lake Bumbunga doing the heavy lifting.
They’re best when dry and crunchy in late summer–autumn; after rain they turn to porridge and the rangers get understandably grumpy.
Stick to formed tracks, skip the heroics, and never drive on a wet crust—bogging here is quicksand with extra embarrassment.
Some areas require park entry or event permits, so check closures and road conditions before you point the bonnet north.
