Selling a car privately in QLD is mostly paperwork with a tan.
For any registered car, you must obtain and display a current Safety Certificate (from an Approved Inspection Station) before you advertise it.
Have the VIN, odometer, Safety Certificate number and a proper receipt; if there’s finance, get a payout letter and clear the PPSR so the buyer isn’t inheriting your debt.
After the sale, both parties lodge the transfer with TMR (online or in person) within 14 days; the buyer pays stamp duty/transfer fees, and plates generally stay with the car.
Remove your e‑tag, cancel direct debits, and keep copies of everything—because memory is not a filing system.
