In Queensland, personalised plates are yours, not the car’s—so when selling, you’ve got two choices.
Keep them: visit TMR to swap the car onto standard plates (or another set you own), pay the plate/transfer fees, have the rego updated to the new plate number, and only then hand the keys over.
Or sell the car with the plates: complete a PPQ plate ownership transfer with the buyer (both parties sign, fee applies), then confirm TMR records show the buyer as the new registered operator and the plates in their name.
Either way, remove your toll tag, tell your insurer, and don’t let the car leave your driveway wearing plates that are still registered to you.
If the buyer’s interstate—or you’re sentimental about “S1K-BOI”—keep the plates and let the car wear generic ones instead.
Rules and fees can change; check TMR and PPQ guidance before you list it on Tradingpost.
