Selling a car with rego but no RWC? In VIC and QLD a current roadworthy/safety certificate is required for a registered sale or transfer (QLD even before advertising), so either supply one or cancel the rego and sell it unregistered. In NSW, SA, WA, TAS and NT there’s generally no RWC for private sale; the buyer just handles transfer and any inspection tied to rego renewal. In the ACT, an inspection is required for transfers on vehicles over about 6 years old. If you can’t produce an RWC where it’s required, your cleanest options are: get the certificate, or remove the plates and refund the unused rego. When in doubt, check your state road authority’s rules and write it into the bill of sale so nobody’s surprised at the counter.
