Selling a car privately in Victoria is straightforward—provided you bring a current Roadworthy Certificate (RWC) to the party.
For a registered car, the seller must supply an RWC (it’s typically valid for about 30 days), then both parties lodge the transfer with VicRoads within 14 days and the buyer pays stamp duty and transfer fees.
Hand over a signed receipt with VIN, odometer, price and date; plates usually stay on the car, and if you’re selling it unregistered, remove the plates and return them to VicRoads.
Clear any finance and provide proof (a payout letter or PPSR showing no security interest) so no one gets a surprise visit from a lender.
For safety, meet in daylight, insist on photo ID, use bank transfer or Osko at a branch, and don’t release the car until funds have landed.
Wrap it all up by cancelling your toll tags and insurance—unless you enjoy paying for someone else’s road trip down the Great Ocean Road.
