selling unregistered vehicle nsw Page 8

Yes, you can sell an unregistered car in NSW—just don’t drive it on public roads unless it’s on a trailer or you’ve grabbed an Unregistered Vehicle Permit. Give the buyer a proper receipt with VIN, engine number, price, date, and both parties’ details, then lodge a Notice of Disposal with Service NSW within 14 days so any fines don’t boomerang back to you. Plates hanging around? Hand them back to Service NSW if they’re cancelled or expired—don’t let them cruise around like it’s 2007.

The buyer will need a Blue Slip inspection to re-register, plus CTP (Green Slip) and rego fees; that’s their circus, not yours. If they want to test-drive, keep it on private property or organise a UVP—no plate-free joyrides down Parramatta Road. Do a PPSR check to prove there’s no finance owing and no write-off history, and get paid securely (bank transfer beats a suitcase of “mate, trust me”). Simple, tidy, and no nasty surprises.
