Short answer: use Service NSW to confirm the basics, then back it up with a PPSR certificate to cover your bacon.
On Service NSW, run a free registration check (plate or VIN) to see current rego status, expiry and CTP insurer, and whether any registration conditions apply in NSW.
Then buy a PPSR check (about a couple of dollars) using the VIN to reveal finance/encumbrance, written-off and stolen status via the national NEVDIS database.
Save the PPSR certificate time-stamped on the day you pay—if a car’s encumbered, a lender can repossess it even after you’ve handed over cash.
For extra assurance, consider a pre-purchase inspection and a full history report; and make sure the seller’s ID matches the rego papers.
