From Melbourne to South Australia you’ve got two moods: the direct run to Adelaide via the Western/Dukes Highway (about 730 km, 8–9 hours), or the smugly scenic Great Ocean Road detour. The coastal arc strings together Port Fairy, Portland, Mount Gambier’s Blue Lake, and Coonawarra reds before Naracoorte Caves and an Adelaide arrival with flies on the grille and a grin.
Do it in 3–5 days for sanity, or two if you’re allergic to detours and joy. Fuel and food are easy; book ahead in peak seasons unless you fancy sleeping in a ute. Once in SA, tack on the Fleurieu Peninsula, Clare Valley, or Barossa—short hops that taste better than they sound at 110 km/h. Pack a spare, a compressor, and common sense; the scenery is forgiving, the distances aren’t.
