spotted stingray

The spotted stingray, not your average scenic beach companion, is a flat-bodied marvel with distinctive dark spots across its sandy or grayish body. Found along the Australian coasts, it can reach up to 1.5 meters in wingspan, and yes, it carries a venomous barb on its tail—so maybe admire from afar unless you fancy a painful souvenir. These bottom-dwellers feast on crustaceans and mollusks, using their electro-sensitive snouts to detect prey hiding in the sand.

Despite their fearsome reputation, spotted stingrays are generally shy and prefer to glide away rather than confront humans. If you're feeling brave or just curious, local aquariums sometimes offer a glimpse into their fascinating underwater world.
