In NSW, stamp duty on new cars is delightfully simple: pay the state for the privilege of paying the dealer. The rate is 3% up to $45,000, then $1,350 + 5% of the amount over $45,000.
Example: a $40,000 car cops $1,200; a $60,000 one is $2,100.
It’s the same rate whether the car is new or used, and the dutiable value typically includes options and dealer delivery, but not rego or CTP.
Luxury Car Tax (federal) is a separate headache—because of course it is.
