subaru lemon years Page 12

Subaru doesn’t have “lemon years” across the board, but a few eras earned extra caution stickers from seasoned owners.

• 1996–2004: EJ25-equipped Outback/Forester/Impreza models commonly reported external and internal head-gasket failures if cooling and maintenance lapsed.
• 2011–2015: Some FB20/FB25 engines (Impreza/XV/Forester/Outback) had notable oil-consumption complaints and piston-ring fixes under service campaigns.
• 2010–2018: Early Lineartronic CVTs in various models saw shudder/valve-body issues; many cars received software updates and extended coverage.
• 2008–2014: Wheel-bearing wear and occasional diff/axle seal leaks cropped up on higher‑km cars, especially if servicing was skipped.

Buy smart: chase full service history, check for recall/service bulletin work, and get a pre‑purchase inspection—including cooling system and CVT behaviour—before you hand over the folding stuff.
