subaru liberty 2006 problems

The 2006 Subaru Liberty is a cracking steer, but age means a few gremlins start throwing spanners. Here are the usual suspects to check before you hand over your hard‑earned:

• Head‑gasket seepage on the 2.5 EJ25: look for coolant or oil at the block’s edges and a sweet smell after a drive.
• GT turbo models: banjo‑bolt oil filter clogging and tired turbos; service history with frequent oil changes is non‑negotiable.
• Timing belt, idlers and water pump due at around 100,000 km/5 years—neglect equals expensive metallic confetti.
• Power‑steering pump/hoses weeping; whining or heavy steering is your clue.
• Front lower control arm rear bushes and wheel bearings wear; listen for clunks or highway hum and watch for shoulder tyre wear.
• CV boots splitting (clicking on full lock), plus aging O2/AF sensors and coil packs causing misfires and a glowing CEL.
• Air‑con condensers and sunroof drains can play up—damp carpets are not factory optional.
• Takata airbag recalls: check the VIN status and don’t gamble with it.

Look for a stamped service book and proof of major maintenance, not just tall tales. Get a pre‑purchase inspection by a Subaru specialist; it’s cheaper than a turbo rebuild and involves less sobbing.
