Porsche’s “synthetic fuel” is e-fuel made by combining captured CO₂ with green hydrogen, intended to run in existing petrol engines without modifications.
The brand is backing HIF Global’s pilot plant in Punta Arenas, Chile, which began small-scale production in late 2022, with early use in motorsport and demo fleets.
Compared with fossil petrol, e-fuel can cut lifecycle CO₂ while keeping similar energy density and drivability; it won’t erase tailpipe emissions, so don’t expect zero-smoke miracles.
Right now it’s scarce and pricey, and Australian availability is limited, but the tech is a lifeline for keeping classic 911s and weekend toys in polite society.
For daily commuting, an EV remains more efficient and cheaper to run; e-fuels make the old stuff viable rather than obsolete.
