tapping noise in roof australia

Hearing a tapping noise in the roof and wondering if it’s a ghost with tap shoes? Relax—down under it’s usually physics, pests, or bits of roof having a sulk.

• Possums, rats or birds: night-time scurries, tapping, and the occasional thud—call a licensed pest controller and seal entry points.
• Thermal expansion: metal roof sheets pop or tick as they heat/cool; check loose screws, clips and flashing.
• Loose tiles, ridge capping or antenna mounts: wind makes them tap; a roofer can re-bed, re-point or tighten.
• Tree branches: eucalyptus limbs love to drum in a breeze—trim them back clear of the roof.
• Plumbing or AC pipework: vibration against timber; add isolation clips or foam.

Start with a daytime inspection from the outside, then the ceiling cavity if it’s safe—no heroics on steep roofs, thanks. If in doubt, book a local roofer via ServiceCentral and enjoy a quiet night without the percussion section.
