The Ford Territory diesel is a stout tow mule, but like any Aussie family bus it’s got a few gremlins.

Here are the usual suspects to check before you part with your hard-earned:

• EGR and intake soot build-up causing rough running, poor economy and limp mode; cleaning or manifold replacement sorts it.
• Intercooler/turbo hoses splitting and boost leaks; upgraded silicone hoses are a lasting fix.
• Timing belt and water pump due roughly every 7 years/150,000 km; skip it and you’re gambling with the engine.
• ZF 6-speed auto shudder or leaks if “sealed for life”; service with the correct fluid, mechatronic sleeve and pan/filter.
• Rear diff bush thump and front control-arm bushes/ball joints wearing; listen for knocks and budget for replacements.

Full service history and proof of the big-ticket jobs are your green flags; buy the best you can and keep a bit in the kitty for the inevitable.
