In Australia, “Tesla FBT” usually means the electric‑car fringe benefits tax exemption for eligible EVs first held and used on or after 1 July 2022.

If your Tesla sits under the fuel‑efficient luxury‑car‑tax threshold for the relevant year and it’s a battery electric (not a plug‑in hybrid after 1 April 2025), the car benefit is generally FBT‑exempt.

That’s why novated leases on Model 3 and Model Y can be far kinder on take‑home pay; Model S and X usually blow past the cap, so no exemption there.

Eligible running costs like rego, insurance, servicing and charging are typically swept into the exemption when supplied with the car.

There are still reporting and threshold quirks, so run it past payroll or your tax adviser before planning the celebratory victory lap.
