Before hitching up, know your numbers: keep the caravan ATM within the vehicle’s rated towing capacity, mind GVM/GCM, and aim for a tow ball download around 8–12%.

Fit an electric brake controller (required once your trailer is over 750 kg with brakes) and use towing mirrors if your van is wider than the tug.

Load heavy items low and over the axle, strap everything down, and consider a weight distribution hitch to keep the rig level and the steering alive.

Tyres matter—set pressures for the load, check wheel bearings and brakes, and do a short shakedown run before the big lap.

If sway starts, ease off smoothly, hold your line, and let the brake controller or built-in sway control do its job—don’t stomp or saw at the wheel.

Leave longer gaps, brake early, and remember rules vary by state; practice reversing in an empty car park so the first audience isn’t half the caravan park with deck chairs.
