toyota 4.5 v8 diesel problems Page 2

Toyota’s 4.5‑litre 1VD‑FTV V8 diesel is a stump‑puller, but it’s not invincible.

Here are the gremlins owners most often report, especially in 70 and 200 Series duty:

• DPF blockage/regen issues on later models (circa 2016‑on); ECU updates and proper highway runs help
• EGR soot and intake sludge; periodic cleans and good fuel/filters keep it sane
• Injectors wearing around 150–250k km causing rough idle, smoke, or hard starts
• Dusting from 200 Series airbox sealing in harsh outback use; many fit improved seals/filters
• Turbos (twin on 200, single on 70) occasionally failing under heavy towing or tunes; watch for whine and boost oddities
• Rare but reported piston cracking/bearing issues on hard‑worked or tuned engines; keep EGTs sensible and service on time

Regular servicing, quality fuel/filtration, and avoiding cowboy tunes keep the big V8 happy for the long haul.
