toyota prado 150 series problems

The Toyota Prado 150 Series is a tough tourer, but like any 4WD it has a few gremlins that prefer long drives to long goodbyes.

  • Early 3.0 D‑4D (1KD) diesels: injector seat/seal issues leading to carbon buildup and potential oil pickup blockage; listen for cold rattle and check service history.
  • 2.8 (1GD) diesels: DPF clogging or failed regens on pre‑update models; Toyota issued software/hardware updates—confirm they’re done.
  • EGR/intake soot buildup over time, especially with lots of short trips.
  • KDSS leaks or clunks, plus worn suspension bushes after heavy off‑road use.
  • Water pump seepage and accessory belt/pulleys around higher kilometres; watch temps and coolant loss.
  • CV boots, wheel bearings and dust seals after rough or sandy work.

Go in eyes‑open: chase a full logbook, evidence of injector work and DPF updates, and get a compression/scan check and an independent pre‑purchase inspection.

A well‑maintained Prado shrugs this lot off; a neglected one can get spendy faster than you can say “Cape York.”
