toyota prado turbo diesel problems

Toyota Prado turbo-diesel engines are tough tourers, but they do have a few party tricks you’ll want to know before the big lap. Issues vary by generation—older 1KZ-TE and 1KD 3.0s, and the newer 2.8 1GD—so here are the usual suspects in Australia:

  • 1KZ-TE heads can crack if overheated; keep the cooling system mint and don’t ignore a creeping temp gauge.
  • 1KD (D-4D) injector seat/copper washer failure can lead to diesel in the oil, cold rattle, smoke, and a blocked sump strainer—service history and injector checks are essential.
  • Airbox sealing/dusting and EGR soot build-up (120/150 series) are known; frequent filter checks and proper sealing help.
  • Early 1GD 2.8s had DPF clogging/regen dramas; many received factory updates, so confirm it’s been done and that highway regens occur.

Listen for injector knock, check for blow-by, and aim for regular 10,000 km servicing. A thorough pre-purchase inspection and an oil pickup screen check can save an engine—walk away if it smells wrong.
