Toyota’s “V8 hydrogen” is real enough, but it’s a pit-lane science project, not a dealer option. Working with Yamaha, Toyota built a hydrogen-combustion 5.0‑litre V8 prototype (think Lexus V8 with new injectors and plumbing) that delivers petrol-like shove with much lower CO2 at the tailpipe. It still produces some NOx and guzzles compressed hydrogen like a footy team at a bakery, and Australia’s refuelling network is basically a couple of dots on a big empty map. For now, Toyota’s public path is hybrids everywhere, some fuel‑cell trials (Mirai fleets), and racing hydrogen engines to learn. Translation: fascinating engineering, but you won’t be ordering a hydrogen V8 LandCruiser this weekend. Keep an eye on the race cars; that’s where tomorrow’s showroom secrets usually grow up.
