trailer brake requirements south australia Page 7

In South Australia, trailer brake rules largely mirror the national VSB 1 standards, which keeps things blissfully simple. Up to 750 kg ATM, no brakes are required (though your nerves may request them on hills). From over 750 kg to 2,000 kg, you need brakes on at least one axle—mechanical override or electric/hydraulic systems are fine. Over 2,000 kg to 4,500 kg, you’ll need brakes on all wheels plus a compliant breakaway system that applies the brakes if the trailer parts company with the tow vehicle. If you’re running electric brakes, you’ll also need a compatible in-car brake controller—no controller, no stopping power, no fun. Regulations do evolve, so check the latest SA guidance before you hitch up; fines and physics are equally unforgiving.
