In Victoria, the golden rule is simple: tow no more than the lowest-rated limit of your vehicle, towbar and towball, and stay within the Gross Combination Mass.
Trailers over 750 kg GTM must have brakes; up to 2,000 kg needs brakes on at least one axle, and over 2,000 kg requires brakes on all wheels plus a breakaway system.
You’ll need safety chains, working lights and number plates, and towing mirrors if your factory mirrors can’t see down the trailer’s sides.
There’s no special lower speed limit for light vehicles towing in Victoria—stick to posted limits, leave extra space, and remember physics doesn’t negotiate.
Secure the load, keep towball download within the maker’s spec, and never exceed tyre or axle ratings; for the fine print and updates, check VicRoads before you hitch up.
