transfer car loan

Transferring a car loan isn’t like handing over the keys; lenders rarely let you “assign” it to someone else. In Australia, the usual path is refinancing: the new owner applies for their own loan, your lender issues a payout figure, and the old loan is settled before the car changes hands. For a private sale, settle with the lender (in person or electronically) so the security is cleared on the PPSR before anyone argues about plates. Expect costs like early termination/break fees, transfer/rego charges, and the buyer’s stamp duty. If you’re keeping the car but want a better rate, you refinance with a new lender rather than “transfer” the old loan—same hoops, fresh credit check. Leases (like novated) are their own circus—sometimes portable, sometimes not—so get the terms in writing before making promises.
