transfer custom plates to new car Page 2

Yes—if you’re staying in the same state, you can usually transfer your personalised plates to a new car without a saga. The rules are handled by your state authority (Service NSW, VicRoads, TMR QLD, etc.), but the gist is: both cars must be registered to you and the fees paid. Submit the transfer application, update the rego, then physically fit the plates to the new car and put standard plates back on the old one so it can be sold or kept legal. Cross-border? Generally a no—plates don’t migrate states; you’ll either retain them on hold or cancel and order new local ones. Expect an admin fee, proof of identity, roadworthy/CTP requirements where applicable, and a quick visit or online form. If timelines are tight, arrange a hold or plate reservation so your pride-and-joy tag doesn’t vanish into the bureaucratic void.
