You don’t actually “transfer” NSW rego to the ACT; you register the vehicle afresh in the ACT, then sort any NSW refund.
First, book and pass an ACT identity/roadworthy inspection, then choose your ACT MAI (CTP) insurer as part of the rego process.
Take proof of identity, proof of ACT garaging address, the NSW rego papers, and surrender the NSW plates when you register; you’ll pay stamp duty and rego fees and get ACT plates.
Afterwards, claim any pro‑rata refund of unused NSW rego/CTP from Service NSW using the plate-surrender receipt.
New residents typically have up to 3 months once you’re living in the ACT, provided the NSW rego remains current.
It’s more paperwork than drama—book ahead, bring originals, and you’ll roll out legal and local.
