used car check mechanic Page 22

Before you hand over cash for someone’s “one careful owner” special, book a pre-purchase inspection with a qualified mechanic (mobile or workshop). In Australia, expect roughly AUD 200–400 for a thorough check that includes a road test, scan tool diagnostics, fluids/leaks, brakes, suspension and a look for crash repairs. Ask for photos of any faults and a written report you can use to negotiate—music to your wallet. If the seller won’t allow a lift or independent inspection, walk away with dignity and your deposit intact. Use ServiceCentral or a trusted local independent to compare quotes and timing, then line it up at the seller’s address. Pro tip: also run a PPSR check for finance/write-off history; shiny paint doesn’t pay off debt.
