used cars to avoid australia Page 3

Looking for used cars to avoid in Australia? Don’t fixate on brand gossip—avoid the car with a dodgy past, not the badge.

Start with the basics: full service history, clear title, no flood or crash gremlins, and a pre-purchase inspection by a licensed mechanic—yes, actually do it.

• Walk away from write-offs or cars with inconsistent VIN/odometer records.
• Be wary of neglected turbos/CVTs (slipping, whining, smoky cold starts).
• Avoid cars with overdue timing belts or missing service books.
• Rust, water in the spare wheel well, and damp carpets? That’s your cue to run.
• Aftermarket tunes without supporting mods or receipts = wallet grenade.

Use PPSR, pay for a scan tool report, and budget for tyres, brakes, and fluids so the “bargain” doesn’t turn feral.

Buy on condition and evidence; if it smells like regret, it usually is.
