using car for work tax Page 9

Ah, the classic Australian dilemma: using your car for work and hoping the taxman gives you a break. In Australia, if you use your car for work purposes (excluding commuting), you can claim deductions on expenses like fuel, maintenance, and depreciation. Two main methods exist: the cents-per-kilometre method (claim up to 5,000 km at a fixed rate) or the logbook method (track actual business use over 12 weeks). Keep meticulous records, or the tax office will treat you like a naughty school kid.

Remember, commuting from home to work is a no-go for deductions—sorry, mate. For detailed guidance, check the Australian Taxation Office (ATO) website or chat with your accountant, unless you enjoy writing letters to the taxman.
