using personal car for work Page 27

Using your personal car for work in Australia can be a financial maze, but understanding the tax implications is key. The Australian Taxation Office (ATO) allows you to claim deductions for work-related car expenses, but only for the portion used for business, not your daily commute. There are two main methods: the cents per kilometre method (up to 5,000 km) or the logbook method, which requires detailed records but can yield more accurate deductions.

Wear and tear, fuel, insurance, registration, and depreciation all enter the fray. Just beware, mixing personal and business use can complicate your tax returns faster than a roundabout in Sydney traffic.

For precise calculations and record-keeping tips, consult the ATO website or chat with a tax professional. Platforms like ServiceCentral can also help manage your vehicle expenses efficiently.
